\nlinguists and social scientists around the globe about developments in Spain
\nin relation to language policies. We denounce the renewed persecution of
\nthe Catalan language by Spanish authorities, and we attach a declaration
\nproviding the details of the matter.<\/p>\n
\ncenturies up until 1980 in a bid to create cultural uniformity within the
\ncountry. The memory of General Franco\u2019s dictatorship is still fresh amongst
\nmost Catalan adults. And there are good reasons to believe that the current
\nauthorities may seek to achieve the same goals through less violent means
\nby taking advantage of the fact that Catalan speakers are demographically in
\nthe minority. During the last few years, Spanish authorities have
\nconducted a sustained strategy to decrease education in Catalan, prevent media
\ncirculation and broadcasting and even create ad hoc regional standards to
\ndivide the community. Such behavior is not deemed acceptable by the
\ninternational community and is in contravention of UNESCO\u2019s fundamental principles as
\nwell as the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural
\nHeritage, the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, and the
\nFramework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, all of which
\nSpain has signed.<\/p>\n
\ndisseminate our declaration and\/or its contents. There are a number of ways in which
\nwe would appreciate your help:<\/p>\n
\nSend a letter to UNESCO or the Council of Europe expressing your concern
\n(a letter template is attached)
\nForward the declaration to colleagues you believe may be especially
\ninterested in this issue. We hope this letter provides an early warning before
\nthe situation in Spain deteriorates and develops in loss of cultural and human
\nrights in a way that may send a poor signal to all the countries and
\norganizations that are working for a future of peace, prosperity and equality.<\/p>\n
